Server Steam Collapsed Because A Hacker Attacked

Steam finally admitted that the collapse of their services during the Christmas yesterday caused by a hacker attack. However, such attacks just be a trigger for the breakdown of Steam servers and the rest are caused by repair attempts made by them.

The attack is meant by Steam is a distributed denial of service (DDoS). Not just once, Steam claimed they were bombarded by as much as two waves of DDoS, quoted by Business Insider on Thursday (12/31/2015).

Post-attack, Steam server was back online. But there are still oddities experienced by users, which they can access another user's account, including a list of games that made the purchase, as well as some credit card information and other sensitive data.

According to Steam, strangeness is not a part of the action of the hacker, because they really just do a DDoS attack. An oddity that occurs because of mistakes made by Steam when it's trying to improve its services.

To defend against DoS attacks, Steam store user data in partner Steam. However, when the data is restored, an error occurred and a lot of user data 'landed' in the wrong place.

Previously there was a threat of a hacker group named 'SkidNP' which mentions that they will be taken offline the Steam servers and Minecraft over Christmas. But ultimately only the Steam servers are down because the service is still running, as usual, Minecraft.
