The Way of Google Against ISIS On The Internet

Google's ambition to narrow the space for ISIS in cyberspace. The giant Internet companies want to limit the ISIS on the internet for propaganda and recruitment activity online is an increasingly narrow group.

Director of Google Ideas, Jared Cohen expressed the desire to localize ISIS on the internet in a forum Waging a Digital counterinsurgency at Chatham House in London, England.

Quoted from Wired, Wednesday, Google argues ISIS propaganda machine could be defeated if their activities in the virtual world can be localized to the area of  'dark networks'.

The term 'dark networks' is a term for a collection of websites that look but hide the IP address of the server that runs the website.

With that arrangement, the website can be visited by Internet users but the user is very difficult to know who is behind the site. Generally, a website that is in 'dark networks' is not to be found in search engines.

Well to dispose of ISIS on the 'dark networks', said Cohen, the way is how to create the conditions that create ISIS members and sympathizers of fear and worry when they are posting their propaganda in cyberspace.

"Terrorist groups such as ISIS, they operate in the dark network, whether we want them or not. What is new is they operate without the support of the internet that we enjoy," he said.

So Cohen argues, stem ISIS will be successful if these extremist groups just stuck in the dark networks alone. Because, by forcing ISIS back into the shadow of the online world, propaganda means the group will not spread massively and easily as before.

Cohen said that if they were localized, then social media accounts ISIS will be erased quickly so they created the account. In addition, this scheme also makes it more difficult people or users to connect and contact ISIS.

Cohen said recently, Google working on products that will help combat the operation of the extremist group. In addition, Google also claimed to have been developing tools that work better in identifying and removing social media accounts associated ISIS.

One of them, Google created a special localization space where there are a gathering place fake social media accounts. He noted the pattern of propaganda ISIS one of which utilize communications to trick spam.

"You may be more familiar with the fraud and spam coming in your email inbox," he said.

Google also has another strategy. Ideas of other Google employees, Yasmin Green said Google will mark the content identified as propaganda. This Penandaaan similar pattern of targeted advertising on the Internet.

This approach is said to have passed by the British government. Minister for Internet Security and Internet Rescue UK, Baroness Shields insists technology companies could do more to promote the message antiextremism on their respective services.
