Astronauts United States Space Agency (NASA) and the International Space Station Commander Scott Kelly showed off the first pictures of flowers that grow in space: zinnia flower that has just bloomed.

"The first flowers that grow in space premiere!" Kelly wrote on his official Twitter account that displays orange zinnia flower photos at the International Space Station (International Space Station / ISS).

"Yes, there are other living creatures in outer space!" he said.
After red romaine lettuce growing in the ISS, zinnia flower selected by NASA projects Veggie facilities because they could help scientists understand how plants grow and flower in microgravity according to NASA official website.

"Zinnia very different from lettuce," says project manager Veggie Trent Smith as reported SpaceDaily page.

"More sensitive to the parameters of the environment and the characteristics of the light. The duration of growth of longer, between 60 and 80 days. The plant is more difficult to grow and make it bloom, along with the duration of the growth of long, making it the precursor is good for tomato plants," he said.

Scientists will continue to monitor the plant zinnia observed and treated by Kelly's.

NASA also said that growing plants can provide benefits in environmental psychology isolated and limited.

"The results were not unexpected that experienced during the run Veggie project actually offers many opportunities for new learning and a better understanding on one of the most important components for a trip to Mars in the future," said NASA.
